Cape Kri

Cape Kri is a legendary coral reef located on the northeast tip of Kri Island in the Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. It holds the ultimate world record for marine biodiversity, making it globally famous among scuba divers and ocean conservationists.

During a single marine survey dive here, renowned biologist Dr. Gerald R. Allen documented an astonishing 374 different fish species, a number unmatched by any other single reef on Earth.

Marine Life Highlights

• Vast Schools: Swarms of fusiliers, snappers, barracudas, trevally, and surgeonfish cluster where currents hit the reef point.

• Reef Predators: Blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, and giant trevallies patrol the drop-offs continuously.

• Macro Life: The pristine hard and soft coral gardens shield rare pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and walking sharks.

Diving Conditions

• Depth: The reef slopes gently from a shallow top down to a sandy bottom below 30 meters.

• Currents: Currents range from moderate to extremely powerful and unpredictable, sometimes developing swift down-currents.

• Experience Required: Due to strong currents, it is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers. Bringing a reef hook is highly recommended to stay safely anchored in place.

• Timing: Diving is viable all year, but visiting at dawn or dusk during slack tide offers maximum fish activity with minimal current.

How to Get There

1. Fly to Sorong: Take a commercial flight from major Indonesian hubs like Jakarta or Bali to Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong, Southwest Papua.

2. Ferry to Waisai: Board the public ferry from Sorong to Waisai, the capital of Raja Ampat (approx. 2 hours).

3. Speedboat to Kri Island: Local dive resorts or eco-homestays on Kri Island typically arrange a 20-to-30 minute speedboat transfer from Waisai directly to their beaches.
